Christmas greetings from the Nani’s! (updated for 2019)

Unlike last Christmas (2018) we are not in-between homes or in the process of moving–yay!

This season’s highlight was having our first Christmas concert in the Temple of Light, which was a glorious experience!

One thing that remains the same as last year is our gratitude and deep appreciation for the blessings we experience every day–through the spiritual path and spiritual community; through divine friendships and loving family; and through fifteen years of marriage and our shared music ministry.

We recently rediscovered for ourselves the playlist that we created last Christmas and realized that we had almost forgotten some of the songs on it. We’ve been enjoying listening to it so much that we decided to share it with you all once again!

This description from last year is still relevant:
Indeed, music occupies a great deal of our time and mental bandwidth; we’re always thinking about what makes music inspiring to us and even more so at Christmas time. So…what we’ve decided to do is to share with you a playlist of Christmas songs that we love. We kept the playlist to (only!) fourteen songs, with artists from Swami Kriyananda to Mahalia Jackson, and from Julie Andrews to Johnny Mathis. While these songs have beautiful melodies and harmonies, and lyrics that we find meaningful [scroll down to find lyrics for some of the lesser known songs], what we find most inspiring is the consciousness that finds expression through the voices.

We hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Welcome Christmas. Bring your cheer,
Cheer to all Whos, far and near.
Christmas Day is in our grasp
So long as we have hands to clasp.
Christmas Day will always be
Just as long as we have we.
Welcome Christmas while we stand
Heart to heart and hand in hand.

May you be filled with the light and the love of Christ, today and throughout a joyful and prosperous New Year!

Love,

Bhagavati & Ramesha
Christmas 2019

“Neither shall they say,
Lo here! or, lo there!
for, behold,
the kingdom of God
is within you.”

Christ Has Come

Jesus Christ is born this day!
Hallelujah!
Born to drive our night away!
Hallelujah!

Joy on the mountains!
Joy in the valleys!
Joy to the nations:
Christ has come!

Candlelight Carol

How do you capture the wind on the water?
How do you count all the stars in the sky?
How can you measure the love of a mother,
or how can you
write down a baby’s first cry?

Candlelight, angel light, firelight and starglow
shine on
his cradle till breaking of dawn.
Gloria, Gloria in excelsis deo!
Angels are singing; the Christ Child is born.

Shepherds and wisemen will kneel and adore him,
Seraphim round him their vigil will keep;
Nations proclaim him their Lord and their Savior,
but Mary will hold him and sing him to sleep.

Find him at Bethlehem laid in a manger:
Christ our Redeemer asleep in the hay.
Godhead incarnate and hope of salvation:
A child with his mother that first Christmas Day.

Christmas Mystery

Long ago there was a little shed.
There three mighty kings did bow their heads
To a gentle babe of low degree
Whom men called the son of Mary.

Who’ll tell to me this mystery:
How a tiny babe in a manger laid
Could so many hearts to love persuade?
This holy son of Mary.

Shepherds came and knelt in wonder there,
Seeing him in light beyond compare,
And his eyes that told them all love was he
Whom men called the son of Mary.

Wonderful it was, that Christmas Day,
How from far and near they came to pray,
How from far they glimpsed his majesty
Whom men called the son of Mary.

Could it be that in that little one
Spirit’s universal love did shine?
If it’s true, he lives in you and me
Whom men called the son of Mary.

Every Christmas Eve/Giving (Santa’s Theme)

Ev’ry Christmas Eve, we are part of the Miracle.
Ev’ry girl and boy shares the joy if they believe.
You can share it too. Just believe in the Miracle–
You will carry Joy with you ev’ry Christmas Eve….

So that ev’ry Christmas,
Ev’ry gift of Christmas
And all that you wish will be yours;
For ev’ry Christmas, Christmas isn’t Christmas
Unless there’s a Santa Claus….
(repeat opening stanza)

In this whole world that we live in,
There is one great joy that ev’ryone can share:
The joy of giving
To the people for whom we care.
If you show love it’s always,
It is always there.
To be giving and forgiving
Is to know the reason why we’re living.
What’s so hard about giving?
It’s a perfectly simple art.
The trick is to live with love from the start
And to give with an open heart.

Christmas Lullaby

Clear in the darkness a light shines in Bethlehem:
Angels are singing, their sound fills the air.
Wise men have journeyed to greet their Messiah;
But only a mother and baby lie there.

‘Ave Maria, ave Maria’:
Hear the soft lullaby the angel hosts sing.
‘Ave Maria, ave Maria,
Maiden, and mother of Jesus our King’.

Where are his courtiers, and who are his people?
Why does he bear neither sceptre nor crown?
Shepherds his courtiers, the poor for his people,
With peace as his sceptre and love for his crown.

What though your treasures are not gold or incense?
Lay them before him with hearts full of love.
Praise to the Christ child, and praise to his mother
Who bore us a Saviour by grace from above.

In the Bleak Midwinter

In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan;
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago.

Angels and Archangels
May have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim
Thronged the air;
But only His Mother
In her maiden bliss
Worshipped the Beloved
With a kiss.

What can I give Him,
Poor as I am? —
If I were a Shepherd
I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man
I would do my part, —
Yet what I can I give Him, —
Give my heart.

The Christ Child’s Asleep

The Christ child’s asleep.
The silence is so deep
That round about, with hope in their eyes,
The animals await,
Their breathing they abate:
They know their time has come to arise.

For Jesus came on earth
To offer second birth
To all who would the blessing receive.
The inner peace he brings
Can lift us on soul-wings
To soar in light, and heaven perceive.

Our pleasures and pains,
Our losses, our gains
Have kept us long bound,
The ropes of yearning hemmed us ’round.
We dreamed of imposing on desert sand
Flower gardens of beauty,
Verdant vales of delight:
Imagination misted our sight!

The freedom we would know
Christ offered long ago,
And even from his slumber flows peace.
All creatures here on earth,
Alive to their own worth,
Can welcome love, and win their release.

The Christ child’s asleep.
The silence is so deep
That round about, with hope in their eyes,
The animals await,
Their breathing they abate:
They know their time has come to arise.

Christmas Is a Feeling in Your Heart

There are toys for girls and boys
Silver bells make merry noise
Yet you should remember from the start
Christmas is a feeling in your heart

Holly wreaths and mistletoe
Carols by the candle’s glow
These are not the most important part
Christmas is a feeling in your heart

Faith and hope, goodwill to man
Love and peace, and faith again
Let the prayers that Christmas bring
Brush your heart like angel wings

Christmas Day will soon be gone
Yet the joy will linger on
If you only learn to do your part
Let Christmas be a feeling in your heart

Welcome Christmas (reprise)

Fahoo fores, dahoo dores
Welcome Christmas, come this way
Fahoo fores, dahoo dores
Welcome Christmas, Christmas day

Welcome, welcome fahoo ramus
Welcome, welcome dahoo damus
Christmas day is in our grasp
So long as we have hands to clasp

Fahoo fores, dahoo dores
Welcome Christmas, bring your cheer
Fahoo fores, dahoo dores
Welcome all who’s far and near

Welcome Christmas, fahoo ramus
Welcome Christmas, dahoo damus
Christmas day will always be
Just so long as we have we

Fahoo fores, dahoo dores
Welcome Christmas, bring your light

Welcome Christmas, fahoo ramus
Welcome Christmas, dahoo damus
Welcome Christmas, while we stand
Heart to heart and hand in hand

Fahoo fores, dahoo dores
Welcome, welcome Christmas, Christmas day

Peace

Peace gave us the mountains.
Peace gave us the sky.
Nightly, when starlight enfolds us,
Peace is its lullaby.
Amen. Amen.

Peace gave us the morning.
Peace gave us the sun.
Bird songs that call us to welcome
Day, and fresh labors begun.
Amen. Amen.

Peace gave us the seasons.
Peace gave us the rain—
Cool clouds that gather to bless us,
Mist hands that soothe away pain.
Amen. Amen.

Peace gave us our hearts’ love.
Peace gave us our smiles:
Rays of God’s presence within us.
Light that all strife reconciles.
Amen. Amen.
